Government even in it's best state, is but a necessary evil, in it's worst state, an intolerable one.
The Big File
I was searching on RootsWeb to fertilize some of the stunted roots on the Reveile.org family tree and I found a GEDCOM file with the name Brian Liedtke attached to it. This file was enormous but it apparently had my grandmother in it because that's whom I was searching for at the time.
I downloaded the file and I could barely convert it and load it into a viewer and when I did I was able to determine that there were about 24,000 people in it. I was sure I was not interested in most of them. I think I'll try to limit the Reveile.org Genealogy portal to some reasonable set of people. So I started trying to find a way of deleting people from the file.
I ended up picking a random ancestor of mine, my Reveile grandfather, James Henry Reveile b. July 10th or 11th 1902 in Bell County TX and doing a "Kinship Report" on him. I figured this would give me something to evaluate the extent of this database.
I got a huge list of people and it was somewhat discouraging as I really didn't know how it was going to help me, however, as I was perusing through this file, I saw a guy by the name of David Lindsay, Earl of Lindsay. The kinship listed to my grandfather was 15th great-grandfather. That meant that I was the 17th great grandson of an Earl. Woo hoo.
Well I managed to export this list of 24,000 kinships to a text file and do some grep'ing and produced a list of kinships from this family tree to James Henry Reveile my grandfather. It turns out that the link from that family tree to the Reveile.org family tree was Mary Jane "Mollie" Edwards born in 1847 in Alabama and married to LeRoy A. "Lee" Reveal born in 1847 in Hunt County Texas. There is a problem with the linkage of the GEDCOM file in the portal and I hope to have that resolved soon but it looks like those two produced dozens of Reveile related descendants including their grandson and my grandfather James Henry Reveile. It could even be that all related Reveiles in the Reveile.org tree could be descendants of those two.
I did do some cutting and chopping on that enormous GEDCOM file and ended up with a little under a thousand ancestors going backwards from Mary Jane Edwards to the people on the list below. The list below being all the entries that matched the list of titles for which I searched. So if this is accurate, it's possible all the Reveiles and some of the Reveals in the Reveile.org family tree are related to this entire list of "titled" persons. I converted the list so that all "kinships" are shown in relation to Mary Jane Edwards. If you can trace your tree back to Mary Jane Edwards and LeRoy A Reveal, then you may be related to the persons on the list. Just add the number of generations between you and Mary Jane.
